Since yesterday a series of shootings have taken place in our neighbourhood, with one occurring just shy of our doorstep. Thankfully, our staff and shelter residents are safe. Our hearts go out to those who have been injured and those who love them. We also extend our deep support and solidarity to the bystanders, residents, and workers in the neighbourhood who experienced these fearful tragedies or who are living with their after-effects. These are hard days.

We are in the process of developing enhanced safety and emergency plans for First United, and will cooperate fully with Vancouver Police Department to support their efforts to keep the community safe. In the meantime, we encourage everyone to remain calm and vigilant and to reach out for support as you need it.

If you are a community member, you are welcome to take advantage of our regular community ministry programming. The programming is open to people of any or no faith and the offerings are summarized below. First United staff who need additional support are encouraged to reach out to First United Human Resources at any time.

Community programming available this (and every) week:

1) Spirit Circle, Wednesdays, 6:30-8pm: an opportunity to gather in community every week for support in a safe place, share a meal, and to explore how we find hope in our lives

2) Spiritual Focus, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, 9-10am: the door of the chapel is open to gather in a safe and respectful space to share your story and listen to others’
